Backpressure

A saturated component signals upstream to slow down, rather than accepting work it cannot complete.

Without it, queues grow until latency becomes indistinguishable from failure. A connection pool applies backpressure by making clients wait, which is why a rising wait count is a more useful signal than raw throughput.
