Observability

Cardinality

The number of distinct time series a metric produces, which is the product of every label's distinct values.

Cardinality is the resource that runs out first in a metrics system. Adding one label with unbounded values - a user ID, a request path with IDs in it - multiplies series count without looking like a large change.
