Fencing
Positively preventing a demoted or unreachable node from continuing to serve, rather than assuming it has stopped.
A node that has lost its lease may still be running and still be reachable by some clients. Fencing - a watchdog timer, STONITH, or revoking network access - converts an assumption into a guarantee.
