Shard key
The field determining which shard a document lives on, and therefore which queries can be routed to one shard rather than all of them.
A monotonically increasing shard key concentrates all new writes on one shard. The choice is close to irreversible in practice, which makes it one of the few decisions genuinely worth deciding slowly.
